The students have an essay award and so do SLA Engineering Division members looking at continuing their education. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Continuing Education Stipend is $1000 given to the SLA Engineering Division member who submits the best essay on how he or she would benefit from a continuing education course. Inspec’s SLA Student Travel Award...

If you were a Librarian, in charge of the science or engineering collections, how would you go about promoting databases within your collection to the appropriate departments that can benefit from it? What could the database producers do to assist in your efforts (e.g., send you promotional items, etc.). Explain how your efforts will benefit your organization. That’s the challenge to students looking to attend the Special Libraries Association conference in Denver CO (June 3-6, 2007). John Donne didn’t write “No librarian is an island,” but he might have had he been a part of the SLA Engineering Division. They’re looking for nominations for the Engineering Division Team Award. This award is offered annually to honor a team. It is sponsored by the SLA Engineering Division and highlights the accomplishments and contributions of a team working on projects in the area of engineering. A team may consist of members who work in a collaborative environment – academic libraries and corporations with several libraries or one librarian involved in a group project. ASLI’s Choice – Award for best book of 2006...

November 1st is the deadline to nominate the best 2006 book in the fields of meteorology / climatology / atmospheric sciences for the Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI) Choice Award. The winner will be announced during the AMS conference in January 2007 in San Antonio, TX. The books will be judged on nine criteria: uniqueness, comprehensiveness, usefulness, quality, authoritativeness, organization, illustrations/diagrams, competition and references. To qualify, the book has to have a 2006 copyright date and can be in any format and at any reading level: college, research, general audience, children’s, reference. Any language is accepted.
